A source close to the Marlins has now given us word that the Marlins are going after the National’s first baseman Nick Johnson. The Nationals want Sean West in return, but the Marlins are not looking to give up that much. This deal would seem to make a lot of sense. In their minor league system, the Marlins have a good deal of players who are just as good as West. Starting Nick Johnson at first base would eliminate Emilio Bonifacio (and his horrible OBP) from the lineup, since Jorge Cantu would have to move to third. Johnson is exceptionally efficient (Career OPS – .837… Career OBP- .398), something the Marlins lack. Although Cantu is a better first baseman defensively, having him at third base would also be a big upgrade from Bonifacio. Overall you’re replacing Emilio Bonifacio (and his .296 OBP this season) with a much better player. Nick Johnson is making $5.5 million this year and he will be a free agent once the season ends.
